Hi all, started looking around today for materials to make a tail, and realized, i wasn't sure how much i need cause i had a question bout one of the steps.
Step three!
Cut the fabric until it rolls like a sausage into a *tail* shape then tack the tail together with a few pins until it is held in the desired shape. Then sew along the edge so that the material is linked to itself in a tube like shape.(Avoid sewing into the pins! ) Then sew the tip of the tail to itself so that the tunnel is closed at one end. Now remove pins! (Kittens should be advised to have their Owners supervision during this. )
Does this imply rolling it up with the material fully on the inside, like you would roll up a sleeping bag, or just roll it till it's bout tip to tip and remains hollow inside? If the latter, do you keep it hollow inside or stuff it? If you don't stuff it, how do you make sure it keeps some semblance of shape and doesn't collapse in on itself? If you do stuff it, what do you stuff it with?
The ones I made were "like a sleeping bag" as you say. You can make them hollow, but then they are kinda floppy. Trying to stuff fiberfill down a 2-3ft long skinny tube is challenging and prone to lumpy spots. The first method will make sure its evenly squishy the entire length of the tail.
i would think roll it into a cylinder, with the fur inside, and then sew the two edges together. Then turn it inside out so the fur is now on the outside and you cant see the seam.
what i did was i knitted on a set of size 7 double-pointeds, starting with 5 on each of the needles, then narrowing it down gradually, turned it inside out, stuffed it, and wove in a leather shoelace to tie it.
