Training methods for an abused pet.
Permalink Closed

So.
I JUST posted my intro, and I'm jumping right on it, lol.
I hope nobody minds too much?

I'm hoping you all can possibly help me.

I've had my pet for over a year or two now. It's a long distance ownership; and it can get rough but we talk A LOT. The two of us are very close.
I do not use harsh trainings, I more use gentle guidance and soft touches to help train.

I wont lie. He was abused by another previous owner of his; quite a bit actually.
Points as of where she'd degrade him, and make him do things, he wasn't comfortable or wanting to do. Being the obediant good boy he is however, did as he was told despite his dislikings. Then after awhile, she sent him an Email saying that he was the worst thing ever, that he was worthless and a nothing, then she just vanished.
Popped off the face of the Earth. Then, I found him.
He isn't one for such harshness in an owner, he just wants love.
I've already dealt with his previous owner, and now she's completely out of the picture. ((thank goodness...))

Anyways.
I've been working on him for over a year now, trying to help get him to be a bit more assertive and stronger.
We've communicated and such, and he's got...Like this...Wall.
He freaks out, and clams up with just about everything I do.

The previous owner used the clicker-training. Everytime he'd give a reaction to her stimulation, "Click-click."
I have NO idea how t get around this training, it's so far embedded into his brain that even the simple clicking of a snapple-top drives him nuts.

Please help me?
I'm looking for training tips to possibly help him get over the clicker training, if there is any possible way.
And I'm looking for other training methods to help make him a stronger person, possibly.

I appreciate any help I get.
So, thank you in advance everyone.

I know with real animals a reward-based system tends to work very well. Basically its aimed toward rewarding good behavior more than it is toward punishing bad behavior.

XP I dont have experience with this stuff, so Im sorry I cant help more.

I also have an abused pet, she just needed soft touches and slow mo build up. That is what i would reccommend for yours.

Considering I'm a reactionary (Reacting to my pets desires and granting them in my own way, basically allowing the pet to lead when they want something) I consider what you have to do the HARDEST possible thing in the world to do.

But Reversing things like that CAN be done, unfortuately to break a mind takes mear days or weeks(depending on the person and the severity) to fix one takes months or years or even decades. And only ONE minor mishap can set you back alot of the work it took to move forward, not necessarily square one but it can feel like it sometimes.

1.) ALWAYS address him as your good little pet, tell him how good he is and how wonderful you think he is. ALWAYS at ever opportunity. Make sure he always knows you think he is a good boy.

2.) Unless he needs it to remain stable, no play. Its hard enough to fix normal mental damage without trying to deal with the damage of play as well. If he identifies himself only as your toy/pet/slave then play, but VERY gentle. No pain and once again, always tell him how good he's doing and be gentle and kind.

3.) Never lose your temper(patience or otherwise) with or even in front of him. You're anger will spark his broken minds defenses and can reverse quite a bit of your work. His mind could regress quite a bit in fear of you(his master/owner).

4.) Even as you move forward with stronger and stronger methods, always ask what he would like, as you get further forward accept "Whatever master wants" less and less. Just keep in mind that never means that, try to keep a balence, its very difficult. Encourage his feedback on a constant basis. Ask if he wants to, does he like it, what would he like. In whatever you're doing. If he clams up from this at first save it until he's getting more open. Just pay attention to how he acts in everyday life and you should start to notice a difference when its okay to start pushing those lines a bit. As his mind stabilizes and heals he'll get stronger in all aspects of his life.

5.) Love. Its the key to everything. Care for him and show him that you do. Take him out to eat, to a movie. Talk with him about the experiences and all around care for him. Never underestimate the power that love can bring to such a situation. The stability of knowing you're always there for him, will help him open up so much. I'm sure with even ONLY this you could repair the damage, but it helps to do all the others as well (they're kinda like a love subcategory).

Anyway, I think I've rambled on more than I really meant to. But as far as the mental game, its what I enjoy most about the world of Pet play and fetish. I hope everything works out for you and your new pet.

As for the clicker change its meaning.  Get said snapple bottle or whatever click and then give love and encourage more reaction.  Keep working with it like that and the click will change its meaning, and once a meaning is positive you can start to move away from it and after awhile that training will go away.

Unfortunately mental issues are VERY hard for anyone OTHER than the person to fix.  I hope things go well for you.

Matt-Sama had a lot of great points.

I think a lot of this will come from your attitude, tone and movements.
Never lose your temper. Always speak softly. Keep your hands low and your movements slow and fluid.
It's all about love and showing him that he is worth a great deal to you.

oops I forgot about that...

6.) No Jerky Movements. (everyone is right) IF you do too many quick and rapid movements it will make him skittish. Like any wounded or abused animal if you move too fast or too jerky it will scare them. Its amazing how like any other animal human's are. So move slow and careful to keep him from being too skittish.

I can't believe I forgot that haha... Bravo to everyone.

I know you may have no need for this but it is a way to help break the training. ask him to do the click him self. tell him its okay and if he wants to he may click the clicker himself. this will help him learn that this sound is okay and not a punishment or any kind of "DO IT NOW" kinda thing. and when he can do it on his own, tell him you are going to make that same sound. if he freaks he's not ready. have him click at you and then you click back. homefully this will teach him not to fear that sound.

walls are hard. i still have a few my Master hasn't discovered yet. we are a long distance atm, but not for long
