When you go out to get your new set of ears/handcuffs/whatever, what do you look for? Is there any site that you prefer over another, or do you just go for the cheapest?!
Personally, I try to find a balance between cost and quality, it isnt easy! (and on some things its impossible, outfits are extremely expensive, considering the amount of fabric in most of them )
Outfits, kit, gear, toys and what ever else you want to classify kink that you buy can easily be expensive. As with most things, the more you pay the better it is, to a point. Of course a $2000 diamond and gold collar is probably not going to be the most functional things for play time, but you get the idea. Leather itself it its varying qualities is inherently expensive.
These are probably widely used, but its nice to have a list if you're bored or happen to not know anyway.
Most of these so far have been just for browsing, but have come highly recommended. The majority of our kink toys etc. have come from a local, physical store.
Add your own, I'm liking this idea the more I think about it.

A lot of the stuff I have is improvised. Of course, leather is expensive, and I have a weakness for leather, so I have splurged on a few pieces. And if I were going to buy something potentially dangerous like an electrical toy or something, I definitely wouldn't skimp. But...I dunno. A lot of the times, as soon as you associate the word "sex" with something, it seems like it's giving people license to jack up the price. For instance, a friend of mine who rides horses told me that you can buy riding crops from legitimate sources for MUCH less than you'd ever pay at fetish stores. Another one of my friends pointed out that you can make your own version of those under-the-mattress restraints from dollar store materials. Lingerie always seems to be crazy expensive, so I go to cheap clothing stores geared towards fashionable (*cough* slutty) 16-year-olds to get much of my "lingerie." I bought a thirty dollar collar at a goth-oriented store nearby only to have it fall apart. Meanwhile, my dollar-store, legitimate cat-collar is still going strong.
So...look around for alternate sources for stuff you want. A lot of the time, if you buy the general purpose version of something instead of the "kink" or "counter-culture" version, if possible, it's a lot cheaper. And then there's just sheer improvisation. I've used hair clips as clamps many times and they work just as well and are usually 6 for a dollar. And things like belts and hairbrushes have a certain charm to them too...
Youre absolutely correct about the exorbatant pricing of kink in general. Some things you just can't get anywhere else, but improvisation and creativity can be even better than something purpose built.
This of course applies to almost everything else, if of course you take the time to learn how to do or make what you're imitating from marketed products.

Impact toys are definitely the easiest items to make on your own for cheap, if you're willing to take the time and learn how to make it that is. For example, a large paint stick, when sanded and lacquered makes a great paddle, or you can be imaginative and add padding to it, and still, it'd be much cheaper than if you were to go out and buy one.
I have several ideas for making my own toys/fetish wear/anything at all really, but what it comes down to mostly is the time and will power. By the time I'm home from work, I don't have much energy to want to sit down and do something complicated, and what energy I do have, I'd rather it be used towards some fun time, so, I opt to buy my items instead.
As Sir pointed out, we visit our local adult store fairly often for most of our items, and I can pretty much say that that won't be happening for much longer. The stuff in the stores are just too cheaply made and fall apart way too fast. That, or we use them much much more than the maker intended =^.^= So, definitely time to start ordering online, and the sites Sir mentioned do have a lot of quality items.
