My mind is racing at a hundred kilimetres a second, so I decided to post this. Based on...possibly months...years?...of research, interviews of people with various paraphilias, and personal soulsearching. I now present, my hypothesis on the prescence of sexual fetishes in the human psyche.

Emergence:
This is a simple idea. The emergence of sexual fetishes generally occurs around the time of sexual awakening, puberty. Fetishes can manifest themselves very early in a person's sexually awakenened state, or later in life. These may be a seemingly random occurence, manifesting as a person delves deeper into their own psyche. Or they can be encountered, as a person searches the depths of sexual information available to them. The latter has become more common due to the vast information available on the internet.
Progression:
As one progresses through their life, and inevitably their sexual lifestyle, fetishes go through periods of wax and wane. No matter how in how small of increments this pheonominon occurs, it occurs in most subjects. A person may have a single dominant or "main" fetish, which may remain in high regard for all of their life, but wax and wane within it's high regard. Others may have Dominant and submissive fetishes, which may wax and wane within their own regard, or even switch positions depending on a person's life. The reason for these will also be explained in my hypothesis. 
Hypothesis:
My hypothesis simply states that sexual fetishes emerge due to a person's subconscious need for something. The subconscious uses common societal symbolism on various acts and objects to create a sexual fetish which fills the "hole" in the subconscious. For example, a person who has an early sexual awakening, would yearn for innocence. This person would have a sexual fetish for something associated with innocence, such as schoolgirl outfits, or even diapers. In extreme cases, this can mean pedophilia, which explains why people who were molested as children have a higher chance of doing the same as adults.
In the progression of a person's life, their style and quality of life may change. They may experience new ideas, or move to a new job where thy feel a sense of more power, etc. etc. this causes fetishes to wax and wane. If the subconscious need is filled in more by everyday life, the fetish becomes less desireable. If the subconscious need is not filled, or filled even less by this change in lifestyle, the fetish becomes more desireable.
Conclusion:
To be frank, no hypothesis is completely bulletproof, especially in sexual psychology. Every situation is unique, and not everyone interprets these symbols in the same way. I realise this, and have revised my hypothesis many times. Although I have not hit many holes recently. I could try to explain the particular fetish that this board discusses, but I'm afraid that A) it's a tough symbol to interpret, and B) I would probably not be very accurate unless it was on an individual by individual basis.
