What is the history of Catplay?

When did it begin?

I've often wondered this.

I would gander a guess and say that cat play probably started way be in the Egyptian times when they used to worship kitties. And the kitties have not forgotten this either =^.^=

petplay as a fetish is a more "recent invention", much like how willing participants of domination and submission can be traced back to the early 16th century.

Animism, however, can be traced back much, much further... to pre-historic times.   Early man was known to have a shamanistic approach to theology and assuming the role as an animal was assumed to empower the pretender with the attributes of that animal.  There are certain cave paintings of men and women dressing as animals and there are even a couple of images of men and women copulating in "animal" form.  Whether or not this counts as petplay is neither here nor there, but I feel that assuming the form of an animal is a very primal urge that everyone at one time feels.  Some people suppress that urge and others embrace it.   Incorporating this feeling into BDSM is a natural evolution of this concept. Not to mention it's fun, hehehe.

~smiling at the explanations .."Thank you for this ..i've often wondered if it went back to egyptian temple cats and even further than that to when people had shamanistic 'totems' like that of Jean Aeul's books clan of the cave bear ...~nodsnod

I don't know, but I couldn't find anything on catplay or kittenplay, hence why I created this site.
But i'd like to agree with Seb, it started with the Ancient egyptian's worship of the Goddess Bast.

You could also argue that it started with anime ;p, as that's where I first saw the first portrayal of kittenplay/catplay
Obviously it's a branch of petplay most closely linked with puppyplay/dogplay.

I actually had a website dedicated to kitty play (kittyplay.org, actually ;3) back in 99-2000. I couldn't find anything at all on it at that point, so I did as you did and made a website. I left the scene when I realized that I'm more of a wild than a domestic kitty. I didn't fit into the traditional Dom or sub roles, and didn't think I'd ever find anyone to match me, so I gave up. Fortunately, I found my match in the most wonderful Wolf. :3

Anyway, I just figured I'd mention that, at least in the late 90s, there was damn near NOTHING online about us kitties. HTH!

kitten/cat play is not "new" but as with most bdsm, kinky or other fetishes it is "new" to the public eye and ear as we become more liberal (and the internets annonimity helps for many).

D/s relationships can be traced back into the past for millenia - just look at anchient mid-east rulers with harems. (this is before the fall rise of alexander the great).

or look at cultures where woman were RAISED to be submissive (and a few where men were) for millenia - ours was no different, but with the rise of emancipation (a good thing) many of those things disapeared for those woman who wanted to be submissive (i dont talk about submissive men as i find that ...unnatural. i dont comprehend it, sorry guys.) it started the bdsm culture in full bloom. when the internet rose up many times that more people learned their inner desires and flocked to the field.

so wile kittenplay and petplay in general as we know it is not that odl (less then a few decades) pet play and kittenplay has been wel known throughout history. from anchient egypt where is was known that worshippers/preachers of Bast often acted and dressed like cats, even in private. so it was as well in the african lands with tribes imploring the power of the tiger, cheeta, lion etc...

in our own culture there is less of a recording of such things, as during our medival period very litle was recorded that lived on throughout the eons.

though i have no doubt that during that time of female "submission" there were couples that did things similar to our kittenplay ;)

I think we can stretch catplay of some variety back to nearly 2000 years ago, in the Roman empire during the reign of Caligula. According to many accounts (and played up a bit in fiction) Caligula was a huge perv, a sadist before the term had been defined, and just... well, don't read about all of the things he did to unfortunate slaves if you have a queasy stomach, let's just leave it there. Anyway....

One of the accounts that is fairly consistent (when the topic of his sexual deviancy is brought up, that is) is one of the ways Caligula liked to torment (and kill) slaves: he'd have his personal guard select and bind nearly a dozen slaves to a line of posts, men and women, all nude. Then he'd strip almost completely (accounts vary on how much) except for the skin of a tiger, which he would wear as a suit. Then he'd crawl around on all fours, growling at the poor helpless slaves, and then randomly pick one and bite their genitals, sometimes to the point where the slave would die from blood loss. Apparently he did this frequently enough that there are accounts of multiple occurrences of this ostensibly private event.

Depravity aside, I think it's interesting to note that the first kitty was a Dom. :P

but if we loosen the terms for kink cat play is way back in greece and many regions, (if our terms are ehaving as a cat during sexual advances) Pagan rituals often used people as symbols of the earth the cat being a popular symbol of the earth. It can be gestured to predate sapien sapien as the belief is that early humans copied their predators and prey's behaviors. A cave man in big cat fur chasing after a female would easily fit into our current kink. So I say there is no time Kittenplay did not exist, we're just more gentle and careful nowadays =p
