Kitten Weight Loss
Permalink Closed

oooh... My very first topic... so excited!  *jumps around in circles*

I have noticed that there are a few of us on here that have been talking about getting ourselves in shape (this kitty being one of them).  I just thought I'd start a post with some really good tips to help us, and any other kitten out there, that may need some good advice.

First I want to say that this kitten is a former weight loss counselor with a background in nutrition & exercise.  Why former, you might ask?  Well, because this kitten is not very good at coddling people.  You have a goal, you work toward that goal, you make a mistake, fine and move on... but I could only take so many whiney women that would give me that bull@#%& about not having a choice (smile  I feel a little like Temko when it comes to that).  So with that being said...

Here are some Kitten Weight Loss Tips:

Limiting your carbs:
You need at least 2 servings of carbs a day (your body really does need that natural sugar).  The best carbs are complex carbohydrates: wholegrain breads, oats, muesli & brown rice.  Complex carbs are broken down into glucose more slowly than simple carbs (white bread, biscuits, crackers) and thus provide a gradual steady stream of energy throughout the day.  Whatever you do DO NOT CUT OUT CARBS ALL TOGETHER. Your body needs that natural glucose.  I don't care how long it's for, it's a BAD idea.  Yes, that "cut all carbs" diet may work, but it's not good for your body & brain.

Watching your meat intake:
Cutting down on your meat is fine, just make sure you're getting enough protein with other foods.  Fish is a great way to cut down on meats (even though technically it's still a meat) because it's usually lower in fat (unless you're eating salmon) and it's packed w/ Omega 3 fatty acids (essential vitamins you can't get other than from fish or flax seeds).
Other proteins that are good supplements for meats: Tofu (mmm), miso, nuts, eggs (no more than 6 yolks per week, too much cholesterol), cottage cheese, regular cheese (watch the cheese intake too, too much dairy can cause constipation bleh) and one of my favorites, peanut butter.  The only problem is that most of those supplemental proteins can be pretty high in fat (with the exception of tofu).  I certainly don't recommend eating peanut butter 3x a day, lol.
Best thing to do is to completely cut out red meat.  Chicken, turkey and fish are great proteins and pretty low in fat.  Save a steak for an extra treat here and there.  Reward yourself.  (mmmm... Rare please!! yummy)

Another really good trick is breakfast:
If you can eat a bit of protein in the morning within 45 mins. of waking up, then you will kick start your metabolism.  Just make sure to snack throughout the day (yogurt, fruit, veggies) because with your metabolism working like that it WILL make you hungrier, and by consistently putting a little more food in your belly, you'll keep your metabolism working all day instead of letting it slow down.  Why protein in the morning?  Well, protein is denser, therefore it's harder to break down and gets your metabolism going a lot stronger than if you were to just eat a piece of fruit.
Now, I AM NOT a breakfast person.  I just can't do it.  I don't like eating in the morning and I'm usually just not up to it.  My solution:  I grab a little handful of nuts and chomp 'em on my way out the door.  It doesn't bother me like "breakfast" does and I get that protein in the morning.  Come 10:00, I'm feeling pretty hungry.

One more tip:
Make lunch your BIGGEST meal.  It is common for us Americans to want to sit down to a big dinner.  Problem is, after dinner comes rest time.  Now, you may not really be resting.  You may be moving about the house cleaning, or studying, or whatever, but because at night our mind begins to wind down and it causes your body to wind down as well.  You'll have a much better chance of burning those "big meal calories" during the day when you're mind and body are active then at night.

FAT:
Say that dirty little word!!  As much as we're trying to get rid of it, it is a essential part of our diet.  Your body NEEDS fat.  If you deprive it, then it will just store what you have.  You don't need any more than ONE serving of GOOD FAT (is there really such a thing? lol) a day.  This can easily be accomplished with a pat of butter, a handful of nuts, a teaspoon of olive oil (in your food, not cooked with).  Just make sure you get it.

You MUST eat:
The way your body works: you need a certain number of calories per day to keep all of your organs running.  If your body finds that you are not giving it what it needs, then it will begin to hold on to everything.  You may not feel like you're starving, but your body doesn't agree with you. It needs these things, and if you won't give them to it, then it's going to take it any way it can.
Just like with pregnancy.  You're body needs a certain amount of stuff. Example: calcium.  That baby needs a certain amount, and if you won't ingest it, than your body will begin to take it from your bones in order to give it to the child.  Crazy, eh?  Just remember, if you don't eat enough calories every day, you're body will begin to store colories and hence, weight loss will become harder.

Food Intake:
2-3 servings of Fruit,
2-3 servings of veggies
2 servings of complex carbs
2 servings of protein
1 serving of fat
1-2 servings of dairy

Well, that's all I can think of for now.  Good luck to us all, and to any other kitten that starts this journey.  If you have any questions at all, I'll be happy to answer them here, or you can PM me.

yey! thank you for all that.
ive just started the 'your body your life'plan by Kim Lyons (the biggest loser trainer) and i love it! ive lost 2lbs already.

im really really getting into nutrition to which im thinking i may like to persue as a career (although im already at uni doing a different course)

i'll add in my experience/tip - dont do fad diets, they may work at they time, but you end up putting the weight back on, plus extra! if you really want to lose weight, you need to make lifestyle changes, and fad diets dont do that

wow, thanks a ton! that's going to come in so handy. if i may, i'd like to offer a few more tips...

have a friend at work/school? go to lunch with them. you're more likely to watch what you eat when you eat with a friend.

chopsticks. they slow you down so that you eat a little bit less, because you can recognize when you're full. if you have a pair of your own, great, or you can get a pack of single-use. my university provides them in dining centers, so it's fairly easy for me to grab them.

cardio exercises. a good cardio workout does wonders. biking, running, treadmills, etc will (slowly but surely) trim down body fat.

my one question is... what about iron? i'd prefer not to take iron supplements, so what else can i find it in (dark leafy greens, other meats, etc)?

I get my iron from spinach. I love spinach. Used to eat it straight from the can when I was a girl (gug gug gug.. I loves me spinach)

Other sources would be:
Liver
Oat/Wheat Bran
Almonds
Red Kidney Beans

Watch the Almonds, though. They're one of the fattiest nut.

The nice benefit to spinach is it's soo easy to mix with other things. Throw it in a stew, in curry, in a salad (leafy spinach, of course), casseroles, etc.

Plus, most daily vitamins will give you what you need in iron, unless your body is the type that doesn't absorb it very well, and then I would just try and get it in your food as much as possible.

Kitten:
Thanks for mentioning the fad diets. You are absolutely right. They fool you to thinking they work, and then when you go back to your typical ways you gain it back +.
Lifestyle changes are the only way. You just have to look at your food differently.

All great tips, both of you!

Another good diet tip is to drink a lot of cold water. If you drink a liter of ice water every half hour for 12 hours a day, just the energy used to heat it to body temp will burn over 700 calories a day. On top of that it will help your body deal with toxins, fight infections, and will help you burn calories when doing other daily activities, making you feel more awake. The only exception to that would be that before meals drink half a liter of warm water. It will make your stomach shrink slightly so you will feel full faster. Following this plan will mean you have to visit a bathroom more often but it means that you can eat non-diet food and still have a healthy caloric intake.

Thank you on behalf of those who are ill-informed. This is a very well thought out post that applies to nearly everybody weather they want to lose weight or just eat healthier.

Nothing makes me roll my eyes more than people who are some some variation of a CARBS=EVIL diet. Thats how your body stores and transportes energy (glycogen and starch etc) heals (clotting) and fights off sickness (immune system).

Interesting topic. I have to say that if I ever got a kitten, well, really, from either side of the leash, I would be very curious about an exercise program being part of being owned. Partly its just me being selfish as an owner....thinner body types appeal to me, and if I can help someone run off 10 or 20 pounds over the course of a few months, so much the better. And partly because I know how good it is for your body to exercise.

This is excellent :3 I'm trying to keep in shape (just started running again!!)

I might also add my two cents about exercising. Cardio workouts are awesome, and though you may not lose weight, you'll be losing fat, toning your body and gaining some muscle. Also, you sleep better and are generally happier ^^

If you can, taking a walk, a short run, bike-ride or swim a few times a week just makes a difference, and it isnt as hard as starting a crazy regiment. Besides, walking with a partner gives you some good conversation time, or walking by yourself can let you clear your head, and let off some stress.

I'm hoping to buy a dance pole sometime in the near (hopefully) future. I know dancing can help keep you in shape, but I'm curious; is dancing for thirty-forty five mins a day as healthy, better, or...eh, compared to say...biking/walking or doing other forms of exercise?

That's an excellent question, Sab, and the answer is yes, but it has to be 30-45 mins of your heart rate being up. So, since dancing with a pole can is more of a slow sensuous dance then I would use it for a warm up/cool down in between your 30 mins of hard foot-pounding. Want a dance to help you with the pole? I say salsa. It's fast paced, up-beat and built on sexy hip movements. It's hot enough to watch on it's own, but using a pole as your partner.... rrreow.
You can get yourself some tapes, or there are plenty of lessons you can find on the internet. Pretty darn easy dance to learn too.

I used to be a ballroom dancer and just training and teaching all week long without any other exercise kept me in very good shape (and that was with a junkie diet).

In fact I was going to mention that for people like me who have a hard time bringing themselves to exercise with straight cardio routines or gym workouts you can find just about any activity that you might find fun which will allow you the same amount of workout.

I've always been personally bored with straight exercise (although I understand it's appeal to many) so now I use a combination of activities: yoga classes, bellydance classes, and even a martial arts class. All can help you burn calories and get fit, and I fill up my time in between classes with practice.

another things ive found (and heard) is that cardio on its own will not work in the longterm. Cardio breaks down the fat so you lose the weight, but you need resistance (weights etc) to build up the muscles, and then flexibility training (stretches) to strengthen and help them grow

Ohh, salsa dancing! I used to know how to do a little bit of that, definitely would be great to learn again. Basically my kind of dancing really isn't any one thing....mostly just lots of swaying of hips and attempting to keep in beat with the music!
Thanks tons for the info and tip!

This is the way most things in life are.

In other words: A little bit of everything is more beneficial than a lot of one or two things.

There is no need to become muscle-bound or stick thin. A combination of muscle tone, a better cardiovascular health and better diet is obviously the way to go.

Of course saying and doing are very different things. I've barely approached the "talking about it" phase.

i hope everything is going well for everyone! it's important to be consistent in your effort to lose weight.

my workout buddy and i have been working hard almost every day. we do half an hour of cardio, then some weight training. even after a week and a half, i've lost some weight, and i've noticed some physical changes in her. we've both noticed some emotional changes: we're both happier, more energetic, and we sleep better at night! she's a larger girl, but we've got a really good support system.

a good guideline for weightloss without a horrible rebound is about 2-4lbs/week.

keep at it, kitties! :D

Bluh. Losing weight. Maybe I should, because I'm sure as hell gaining at the moment, but on the other hand it's also a lot of effort (no candy anymore, because that's the largest problem, and I'm not even consuming that much. My normal food intake is quite healthy, being a conscious vegetarian and all), and quite expensive.

Too expensive you say? Well, I should maybe eat a bit more fruit and veggies, but they are getting more and more expensive here (yesterday I payed more than 5 euros for 2 zuchinis and 2 eggplants!). I should also excersize more, although I already cycle about an hour per day for 4/5 days a week. Since I really dislike random running around, I should go to a gym for cardia and such, and I really can't afford that as well. So maybe I should start running on my own *muh*

eek, 5 euro for 4 moderately-sized veggies? that's ridiculous. that's about US$7.50, if i'm not mistaken. don't want to check. but if you're already doing what you can, i really don't know! i'm one of those silly americans who thinks that more fat means more flavour. but i've really been working hard to eat more veggies. a salad with every meal, limiting everything else. it's working for me!

good luck to you!

If you've got a healthy diet and do do a lot of exercise but still are gaining weight you may want to consider going to the doctor, to get your thyroid checked out. I know a few people who've had problems with their thyroid that messed with their metabolism.

Have gone to the doctor already, and been checked thoroughly and nothing seems to be wrong. Well, I should really cur on my chocolate intake, so I'll try that and see what happens. And maybe, if after a while nothings happens, I should visit the doctor again...

This. i think this is the single most important thing people forget - you need food.

also some fun-facts:

Muscle weights more then fat. so you might be losing very litle weight with working out, you might just be buring far and building muscle. i know i do.

Fat is storage. if you have fat it means one of 3 things. you have to much "recourse" intake and your body stores it for future use. You have to much intake of a specific type or group of recource. like calcium, iron, water, etc... or 3: you have to little and your body is hoarding.

eat balanced and work out, and in 6 months you might not have lost a lot of weight, but you sure as hell did lose a lot of fat, and worked up your health ;)

ps: Food is expensive here. i'm from holland and food is pretty expensive. it's mostly vegetables and meat that cost a lot here, but keep in mind: you need food, even if it costs more - you'll have to cut on some other corners. when times have been hard on me/wife before we've cut down on other things like games, new clothing etc... but you should NEVER cut on food/health.EVER.

Hey you're Dutch too, how funny!

But ehm, yes, as my example above states, veggies are expensive. In my case however (being a student, and I have not been able to work for quite a while, so my income is limited) that does mean cutting on food, because there is not much more I can cut from.

i dont find veggies or fruit expensive, theres always a big market in the town center with fruit and veg stalls all locally produced and you can buy loads for a very little amount
and just the other week i bought 6 punnets of blueberries from Asda (walmart for the americans) for 37p each! (think thats about $1 american)

i can see how food is expensive. for me, though, i don't have to worry about the cost of my food, because the dining centers at college are essentially all-you-can-eat buffets. it's not at all cost-efficient, because the meals really do cost an awful lot (US$7.75 for lunch, US$9.50 for dinner), but the most i get is a salad, some good grains, and some form of protein (usually chicken or fish). that plus working out for half an hour a day is really working!

the most important tip is just to keep at it! best of luck to everyone!
