Is there a distinction between "baby kitten play" and "adult cat play"?
It seems to me that there are at least two different varieties:
Baby kittens are entirely helpless, mew lots for their mummies, and are completely adorable. Baby kitten play might be some sort of hybrid between Adult Baby (infantalism) and kitten play, for instance...
Cats, on the other hand, are independent, assertive, willful, and occasionally spiteful. There is no sense in punishing them, and, in truth, you are more their owner than they are your pet, if you take my meaning. Anyone who has been owned by a cat understands exactly what I mean. Thus, to me, "Cat play" brings to mind less of the pet aesthetic, and more of the mistress in a latex cat suit with a whip.
Is there a distinction... and which are you/which do you prefer?

To begin with, BDSM is a very personal thing, easily shown by how many names there is just for someone who is a dominant and therefore simple labels can spread over a very large area, I am sure there are people in this forum who call kitten play, cat play and visa versa.
However, I dont believe that is what you are asking, what you mean is "is there a distinction in the ages of your "cat" that you get in puppy play", and I dont think there is.
Dog (and puppy) play has a much broader range, because we see dogs mature as they grow, with puppies having bouncy, playful attitudes and are constantly falling over, then when they grow up, some are put into work as guards or other types of work, so we can see how a puppy is much different to a stern adult dog that must be trained. Cats on the other hand are only used as pets, and as they grow up, the only difference in them seems to be the amount of food they eat and how big they are! An adult cat will still roll around on the floor purring to itself if you rub its belly in the right way.
This is mirrored in animal roleplay, dog play can be very light and almost vanilla to begin with, with puppy play being a bouncy playful character, and working dog play can involve much more training and BDSM-themed work (similar to pony play). On the other hand, in my opinion a cat is just a kitten with a bigger body, and a slightly more grumpy attitude. People just find kittens so cute, that they will happily find it fun to roll around, purr and mew whilst someone tickles their belly.. Kitten play just seems to sound nicer phonetically than cat play (I think its the hard "T" in the end of cat play that does it, it breaks up the phrase, kitty play rolls better)
What you describe as "cat play" almost seems nothing like cat play, and more like a BDSM dominatrix with a bottom, no animal roleplay involved. However, as I said earlier a huge range of people practice BDSM, and I am sure a latex clad woman happily dug her claws into her paw Owner
Kittens, if you ask me, are just pathetic. They roll around on the floor mewing, they can just about manage to eat but they can't do much else. They can't even SEE!
Cats... on the surface, cats may appear to be 'in charge'. They turn their tail up at you, they walk away, they scratch the couch to hell even though you tell them not to... but at the end of the day, all they want is to be petted and played with and to curl up in your lap and be cuddled.
They're not dommes, they're just bratty subs!
A prefer the word 'kitty' though, in a BDSM context.
I agree with daddystouch..... Im definatly a bratty sub :P. But the cool thing about all ages of cats is they're curious and very easily amused so it's easy to get their attention.... it's all about keeping it! They're a challenge but so worth it in the end cause once you get on their good side they'll love you forever... in their own special way :D
